Addressing the Problem of This Custom Glass Wine Cellar through Expert Renovation

This Lovely Wine Cellar was Renovated Because of Its Wine Cooling System Problems

During their initial assessment, the wine cellar experts were shocked by what they found. It was one of the worst cases of mold infestation they had ever encountered, despite having worked on numerous wine cellar renovation projects affected by mold in the past.

The infestation had become severe, with many of the bottles turning green. It was evident that even though the wine closet was cool, there were significant gaps allowing moisture to enter. As they inspected further, they noticed numerous cracks throughout the cellar.

The root of the problem lay in the fact   that the client had initially hired a contractor in Newport Beach who had limited knowledge about wine cellars. This contractor had failed to address the issue of the hot wall and the lack of insulation.

The wine cellar was directly exposed to an exterior wall that received sunlight for most of the day, making it easier for air molecules to condense and seep through the cracks into the cellar.

Consequently, the team had two main challenges to tackle: minimizing the impact of the hot wall and effectively sealing all the air gaps in the wine cellar.

Initial Process in Repairing this Contemporary Wine Cellar

This Contemporary Wine Cellar Features an Elegant Design with Glass Doors and Modern Wine Racks

The first thing the team did was to remove everything from the bottles, racks, and even the studs. They had to rebuild the studs, install a new wine cooling system, and apply closed-cell foam to improve the insulation.

This foam not only strengthens the insulation but also acts as a vapor barrier, eliminating the need for an additional layer to prevent moisture.

After the foam had hardened, they installed a moisture-resistant green board on the main wall. Green boards are excellent for wine racks and can withstand moisture effectively.

High-Quality Glass Wine Cellar Door

To prevent moisture buildup inside the modern wine displays, similar to how it is done in refrigerators, the team made sure to seal the entire space. They had three frameless glass wine cellar doors specially designed for this closet. These oversized glass doors were weather-stripped and carefully sealed around the edges, leaving no room for air to pass through.

The glass panels were held together at the corners using brushed black pivot hinges. These hinges are specifically designed for wine cellars and are superior to regular shower hinges as they minimize the presence of any gaps that could allow air to enter.

Here’s the Proper Wine Cooling Unit For This Custom Glass Wine Cellar

After ensuring that the closet was completely airtight, the team focused on selecting a suitable cooling system for the wine cellar. The previous refrigeration unit, which was from WhisperKOOL, was too large for the space.

You will not find the cooling system visible in the closet pictures because they took great care to conceal all the coils and electrical components.

Commercial air conditioning systems prioritize functionality over aesthetics, so the challenge was to integrate the AC without disrupting the design of the wine closet.

The team opted for a ductless split system cooling unit as a solution. They positioned the condenser outside the hot wall and ran the coils along the ceiling. As a result, the register/air supply vent for the cellar was mounted on the ceiling.

The metal housings of wine cellar cooling units can be easily opened for inspection, cleaning, or repairs, such as in cases of leaks. If you’re not familiar with maintaining commercial units, it is recommended to have them inspected and cleaned at least once a year. The air inlet and outlet inside our wine closet are discreetly located on the ceiling, hidden behind a wooden grill.

Integration of Aesthetic Elements: Metal and Wooden Wine Racks

Renovations are often necessary for outdated custom wine closets, the wine displays with mold issues or displays with worn-out racking and walls. If you’re facing the same situation as the featured wine closet, it might be a good opportunity to embrace a fresh style and incorporate new functional innovations.

Although a complete makeover may seem like a lot of work, based on our experience, all of our clients have been highly satisfied with their renovated wine cellars.

Since many rooms already boasted striking designs, the team decided to place the cellar in an empty white hallway, offering uninterrupted views of the owner’s wine collection. They opted for a modern yet minimalist design, blending seamlessly with the hallway’s simplistic look. A glass wine cellar door, metal peg wine racking system, and modern LED lighting completed the desired style.

A Wine Cooling System Chosen for Small Wine Cellars

Given the limited space, a split-type cooling system proved ideal for the small glass wine cellar, holding approximately 160 wine bottles.

To ensure sufficient cooling for each bottle and uninterrupted operation, a ducted, commercial-grade air conditioning unit was chosen. The added benefit of humidity controls negated the need for a separate humidifier, streamlining the setup.

The cooling system boasted a control panel for temperature and humidity regulation, conveniently placed outside the cellar.

This way, adjustments and monitoring could occur without disrupting the cellar’s environment. The user-friendly control panel featured tactile sensors for easy operation.

To optimize air distribution, the air duct was discreetly positioned on the wine cellar’s ceiling. Aesthetically, it blended seamlessly by concealing beneath a black-painted, union jack metal grille, maintaining the cellar’s visual harmony.

Metal Wine Racks for Space-Savvy Wine Lovers

Metal racking systems outshine wood in durability, making them ideal for tight spaces while exuding style and elegance. Metals resist rotting, ensuring a long-lasting solution.

The designers for this project fixed metal wine racks to a dark wall, illuminated with soft, modern LED backlighting, creating a striking modern understairs wine cellar visible to guests in the hallway, enhancing the luxurious ambiance of the house.

The hallway’s narrow width allowed racks on one side, optimized to hold three wine bottles for every two pegs, providing space efficiency. Customizable peg arrangements suit various small modern wine cellars.

The metal pegs alone held an impressive 159 bottles. A chic metal display box at the rack’s center highlighted the owner’s favorite wines, accommodating three large bottles. For added flair, a small mirror wall reflected light within the enclosure.
